Words

I love to tell stories. My background in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication gave my the opportunity to not just tell my own stories, but to tell the stories of others. Below are examples of my written, recorded, and filmed pieces.

Decisions, Decisions

The Process:

All CURB staff members must report on an in-depth feature 20,000 word story and create an interactive Alternative Story form.

My Role:

I decided to write a story about how academics from many different disciplines believe decisions are made, because this story fits with the magazine’s philosophy of navigating decision making. I conducted seven interviews, wrote the story, created the infographic, organized a photoshoot to get images to accompany my story, and created a layout for the print publication.

Outcome:

My story was published in on a three page spread in the magazine that was distributed to 10,000 University of Wisconsin Alumni. Additionally, the full length version of the story is posted on CURB’s website.

Connecting Midwest & Middle East

The Process:

In Souvenirs Magazine, a student-run travel magazine where I serve as the Art Director, I realized that the Middle East is often underrepresented in the submissions that we receive. I knew I wanted to create representation for this area of the world and I knew that Art History Professor Jennifer Pruitt has a deep connection with the middle east and a story that is worth sharing.

My Role:

I interviewed the professor, wrote a 1500-word feature on Professor Jennifer Pruitt’s incredible passion for Islamic architecture and illustrated the piece.

Outcome:

Positive representation for the Middle East is incredibly important. I was able to use my platform that gets 3,000 digital impressions and prints 500 copies, to amplify her message.

Music Education Podcast

The Process:

Students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication must report on an in-depth story on a topic of their choice. I reported on a story with both multimedia and text elements about the financial challenges facing music education in Wisconsin.

My Role:

For this project, I was able to pick the topic, find sources, and decide decide what mediums to use to tell their stories.

Outcome:

This project allowed me to learn best journalistic practices for reporting and get hands-on experience.
